The Polk County Sheriff's Office recently announced the arrest of a man in connection with a fatal DUI crash that happened earlier this year in Winter Haven. On January 25, a collision took place on State Road 60 at Logistics Parkway that claimed the life of 35-year-old Orli Dagoberto Argueta Sanchez. As reported by the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Sanchez was driving a 2004 Nissan Sentra when he was struck head-on by a 2022 Hyundai Sonata traveling in the wrong direction.
Following an exhaustive investigation, detectives from the PCSO’s Traffic Homicide Unit arrested Sergio Nino Ramirez, 27, on April 15, 2025, charging him with DUI Causing Death (F2) and Vehicular Homicide (F2). Ramirez, a Lake Wales resident and US citizen, was taken to the hospital following the crash. While sitting undisturbed at the hospital following the crash, investigating detectives had to secure warrants for Ramirez's blood, which later revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.12 g/100mL, above the legal limit of 0.08 g/100mL.
"An innocent man was killed in that horrendous crash nearly three months ago, but Sergio Ramirez’s life goes on. My detectives are the best at what they do, and they have built a very strong case that should result in Ramirez getting the justice he deserves," Sheriff Grady Judd shared in a publication from the PCSO. The sheriff's office reported that data from the Crash Data Retrieval (CDR) system of Ramirez's car indicated no signs of braking or other driver input prior to the collision, suggesting no attempt was made to avoid the tragic event.
Ramirez is currently held without bond and had his First Appearance on Wednesday. Recovering toxicology results from the University of Florida lab and examining the CDR from Ramirez's Hyundai Sonata, the detectives' investigative efforts culminated in his arrest. The PCSO credited their thorough work in preparing a substantial case against Ramirez, who now faces considerable legal consequences for the choices made that January morning.
