League City has recently joined the ranks of Texas communities embracing their musical roots, having been officially recognized as a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community, as announced by Governor Greg Abbott. Details about the Texas Music Office’s initiative and League City's certification process came through a press release, where Abbott congratulated the city for joining a statewide effort to support the local music industry and stimulate economic growth.
Abbott emphasized the impact of music on the state's brand and culture, saying, "Music Friendly Texas Communities work tirelessly to attract and develop the local music industry to boost local job creation and economic growth." According to the Governor's office, the music industry in Texas is a powerful economic engine, supporting 196,000 jobs and $31 billion in yearly economic activity. In the same announcement, Senator Mayes Middleton and Representative Dennis Paul gave accolades to the city for their commitment towards the arts, and fostering a business environment conducive to growth.
In League City, Mayor Nick Long and other community members foresee the designation as a stepping stone to further enhance their artistic scene. The Music Friendly Texas Community Certification Ceremony is scheduled for April 26 during League City’s “A Night of Celebration” at League Park. The event will showcase the collaboration between TMO and the city, with Gini Mascorro, Community Relations and Outreach Specialist at TMO, presenting the designation.
Local initiatives have already begun to shape the city's culture; Stephanie Polk, League City Convention and Visitors Bureau Manager, cited events such as Saturday Jazz Nights and the White Linen Night Art Crawl as key efforts in establishing the city as a hub for live music. The city's Public Art Initiative, supported by local leadership, aims to promote both visual, and performing artists, as stated by Mayor Long. Tucker Hart, advisory board member and co-founder of the League City Folk Association, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that recognition will open more doors and opportunities for our community to grow with music. With this latest addition, League City joins an expanding list of communities in the state, becoming the 80th Music Friendly Texas Certified Community.
