A hiker in his 60s became disoriented and lost after separating from his companions on the Manana Trail near Pearl City this past week. The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) swung into action following a distress call logged at 3:28 p.m. on April 12, according to a report from the HFD. The combined effort of ground units and an aerial team successfully resulted in the hiker's rescue.
The HFD was quick to deploy a comprehensive search and rescue operation, involving six units and 17 personnel to scour the area for the missing individual. Ground teams initiated the search on foot soon after the first unit arrived at 3:42 p.m., while the secondary unit readied an operational landing zone to seamlessly facilitate air rescue endeavors.
In a statement obtained by the Honolulu Fire Department, "Air 1 inserted rescue personnel on both the Waimano and Manana Trails to search a larger area." The aerial search team's efforts bore fruit as they managed to locate the lost hiker from above. Rescue workers were swiftly lowered to the ground to perform a crucial first contact and medical assessment.
Thankfully, the hiker was found to be uninjured and was efficiently airlifted to safety. By 6:13 p.m., he had been delivered to a predefined landing zone and into the capable hands of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department.
