The situation in Loudon County has escalated from a search to a recovery mission as local authorities look for two missing teenagers presumed to have jumped from the I-75 bridge into the Tennessee River. The announcement was made yesterday by Sheriff Jimmy Davis, who indicated that after a day of intense searching, the likelihood of a rescue had diminished, as reported by WIVK. Local resident Blake Moore initially alerted authorities to the odd scene early Wednesday morning when, chased by the police, a young man appeared on his neighbor's porch requesting an Uber ride to Chattanooga.
According to the same report from WIVK, the teenagers were involved in a police chase in a stolen vehicle that was later found abandoned near the bridge. The multi-agency search mission involved land and water efforts with K-9 units, drones, and even a remote-operated vehicle for underwater searches, as detailed by Sheriff Davis to WVLT.
In a separate development, a third teen associated with the chase was detained by authorities. After the pursuit had been called off and the car found abandoned, he was discovered on a local resident's porch, sustaining major injuries consistent with a fall from a bridge, as Sheriff Davis conveyed in his statement to WBIR. The suspect, now in the hospital, informed the authorities that he and two others had jumped from the Tennessee River Bridge while evading the police.
With the "golden hour" for rescue now passed, the efforts have shifted towards recovery. "Unfortunately our 'golden hour' has passed of any type of rescue, so now we're in recovery phase and trying to make sure, to see, if they are in the water that we're trying our best to be able to locate those individuals," Davis told WBIR. The Loudon County Communication Center is currently seeking information from the public regarding the incident.
