Luna Park at Coney Island opened for its 122nd season last weekend, drawing big crowds to classic rides like the 98-year-old Cyclone roller coaster. Fans old and new came out to celebrate the start of another summer at the iconic Brooklyn amusement park. According to ABC7NY, some ardent followers were queued up as early as 4:00 a.m. to catch the first exhilarating ride of the year.
The Cyclone's legacy was honored in effervescent style with the "Egg Cream Christening" ceremony, a tradition that predates the rickety rails themselves. King Henry, dubbed the monarch of Coney Island, was the master of ceremonies, hosting the exuberant revelries, complete with drum lines and dancers. The carbonated concoction known as the egg cream took center stage as well, with Chris White from The Seltzer Boys serving up the local specialty that he said is "older than the Cyclone. It's been around for over a hundred years," as noted by ABC7NY.
First-timer Sarah Diaz, in a statement obtained by ABC7NY, expressed her thrill succinctly after her Cyclone encounter: "It was awesome! I want to ride again, right now." Meanwhile, for David Dubin, the experience was a nostalgia-fueled joyride: "I love this roller coaster so much. It has meaning in my heart and in my childhood. I grew up when it was owned by other owners."
Alongside the nostalgic pull of the Cyclone, Luna Park has spiced things up with new arcade games, refreshed retail spaces, and a revamped patio at Salt & Sizzle to keep the amusement park experience modern and engaging. According to NY Post, “Luna Park in Coney Island is committed to upholding its role in safeguarding and preserving the legacy of the historic Amusement District in New York City. Through timeless and thrilling attractions, the park continues to bring joy to New Yorkers and tourists annually." Luna Park opens every weekend until Memorial Day, and then daily throughout the summer.
Coney Island is gearing up for a summer of excitement, with thrilling rides and popular events ahead. The 43rd annual Mermaid Parade on June 21 is one of the key highlights.
