Lumturje Shuti, a Latchkey teacher at Pearl Lean Elementary, has received the Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award. This recognition highlights her dedication to her students, extending beyond classroom duties to creating a supportive environment. According to a family member’s nomination statement, Shuti often uses her own funds to provide supplies and snacks for her students.
According to an interview with Shuti by FOX 17, the spark for her lifelong dedication to education was ignited by the portrayal of teachers on screen who made a palpable difference. "Many shows out there had teachers being portrayed, wanting to make a difference, and I always liked that. And it made me feel that is something to go into and make you feel good about yourself," she said.
The Michigan Lottery's contribution to this culture of recognition isn't insubstantial, having provided over $29 billion to public education since 1972, as per a report from 9and10news.
The Excellence in Education award celebrates such public-school educators like Shuti who consistently push their students to higher academic achievement. Criteria for the award include excellence, dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness. Shuti's unwavering dedication plays out in her use of personal resources and extended hours until the last student is safely picked up, a detail underscored by Suzanna Shkreli, the Lottery Commissioner.
Aside from the professional accolade and the $2,000 prize, Shuti's story is set to be featured on various media partner stations, adding a public spotlight to a journey that began 30 years ago. Her impact isn't limited to just academic outcomes; Shuti is lauded for creating a supportive environment and nurturing parent-teacher relations, said MI Lottery Connect.
