An incident at Overton Bark, a dog park in Memphis, has drawn citywide attention after a man was recorded pulling a gun during an altercation reportedly sparked by a disagreement over dog's play. Mark Tye recounted to WREG how an out-of-town couple accused his dog, Heidi, of being overly aggressive in playing with their dog. The situation escalated, leading the man to allegedly brandish a firearm. "Nobody wants a gun pointed at them," Tye told WREG after expressing his disbelief over the dangerous turn of events.
Witness Andrew Buckner, who documented part of the incident on his phone, said to Action News 5, "It just escalated super quick from there for no reason." Tye, a regular at the park, was also in possession of a firearm during the confrontation but chose to not pull out his weapon due to the presence of children and other parkgoers. "10% of me feels like I should have, but 90% is glad I didn’t," Tye described in a blend of relief and retrospective contemplation.
The video which shows the man with the gun shouting profanities and threats, ultimately, did not lead to any shots being fired. The gunman was seen leaving the park in a dark-colored car that lacked a license plate. According to a follow-up by FOX13, another patron of the park, upon the gunman's departure, disparaged the man’s action, finding humor in what others perceived as a threat. Buckner, in hindsight, regretted laughing and acknowledged the danger of the situation, noting that it could have escalated further.
While police reportedly responded to an armed party at Overton Park, the officers allegedly did not enter the dog park nor take statements from those present. "They drove through and never stopped and just kept driving," Tye mentioned to WREG. Regardless of witnessing a patrol car circling the vicinity, no direct contact with law enforcement was reported by Tye and other witnesses. This detail points to crucial deficiencies in the emergency response which potentially exposes an absence of rigorous protocol or an unfortunate oversight on the part of Memphis Police Department.
As of now, the Memphis Police Department has not taken a report regarding the incident, nor confirmed an ongoing investigation or identified a suspect, as detailed by Action News 5. This developing story remains a focal point for local concern as community members seek clarity and resolution on the altercation that disrupted the typically peaceful setting of Overton Bark.
