
Following the tumult of an Easter celebration turned violent in Lake City, police have arrested a man in connection with the shooting that injured a police officer. 25-year-old Justin Le’on Claridy has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, as per the Lake City Police Department's announcement. The rapid apprehension comes after authorities released a video seeking the public's assistance.
The incident occurred during an Easter event that was attended by several thousand individuals, hosted at the Annie Mattox Recreation area on NE Center Avenue. According to ActionNewsJax, Claridy was apprehended yesterday, after having been released from prison just a week prior. His criminal history adds a layer of complexity to the case, as he had recently completed a sentence for a violent offense.
Claridy is no stranger to the criminal justice system, having served a sentence for aggravated battery on a pregnant victim. First Coast News indicates that his most recent stint behind bars lasted four years and seven months, ending just the day before the Sunday shooting.
Investigators are yet to release details on the motivation behind the shooting or how it unfolded amid the celebrations, however, the swift arrest highlights the police's commitment to community safety. According to News4Jax, the officer involved sustained injuries, but thanks to a community that quickly rallied together, law enforcement was able to make a timely arrest.
