In a recent development, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. has disclosed the indictment of Tyrone Massey, 39, for an unprovoked stabbing incident that took place in Penn Station last March. Massey is being charged with one count of Attempted Assault in the First Degree and one count of Assault in the Second Degree, as shared in a press release by the District Attorney's Office.
According to the details of the indictment, in the early hours of March 27, near Penn Station's 33rd Street entrance and adjacent escalators Massey allegedly slashed a 35-year-old man on the neck with a razor blade, in an unanticipated attack. Following the incident, the victim descended the escalators where MTA police discovered him. EMTs treated him on the scene for his injuries. "As alleged, Tyrone Massey approached a stranger in Penn Station and slashed him without provocation," District Attorney Bragg stated. "Violence has no place in our bustling transit system, and we will continue to collaborate with our law enforcement partners to hold violent offenders accountable."
Assistant District Attorney Jesus Castaneda of Trial Bureau 30 is leading the prosecution, under the supervision of Assistant D.A. Erin Tierney, Bureau Chief of Trial Bureau 30, and Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo, Chief of the Trial Division. The indictment is part of a larger effort by D.A. Bragg's office to combat transit system crime, which includes other violent incidents as well as sexual abuse charges this year.
The office has acknowledged the role of MTA Police in the response to the attack, specifically highlighting the contributions of Officers Jackson Fontana and Peter Colavito. This case is a continuation in a series of legal actions by D.A. Bragg to address, and deter violent crime within the New York City transit system including previous charges for unrelated slashing and stabbing incidents at subway stations, and the prosecution of a defendant convicted for multiple slashings near the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
