Woman, 43, Grazed By Gunfire Inside Canarsie's Bay View Houses, Gunmen Flee

A 43-year-old woman was grazed in the left arm during a shooting at 2105 Rockaway Parkway in Canarsie on Tuesday evening, according to police. Multiple men wearing black clothing fled the scene in a gray Toyota, and police sources say they are still searching for the group, with suspects remaining at large.

The woman was taken to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center for treatment, according to News12 Brooklyn, which first reported the shooting. The address where the gunfire broke out sits inside NYCHA's Bay View Houses, a 23-building public housing development that is home to more than 3,100 residents across 1,610 apartments, according to NYC.gov. The complex was originally built in 1956 to house low- to middle-income families in Canarsie.

A Complex Mid-Renovation

The shooting comes as Bay View Houses is in the middle of a massive overhaul. NYCHA closed on $757 million in PACT program financing in December 2025 to fund major building, security, and infrastructure upgrades across all 23 buildings in the development, per NYC.gov records tied to the project's PACT renovation financing. That transition includes a shift to Project-Based Section 8 management, though it has not stopped gun violence from recurring inside the complex.

This is not the first shooting reported inside Bay View Houses this summer. On July 7, a 30-year-old man survived after being shot in the abdomen inside an apartment building at 5954 Shore Parkway, another address within the same complex, as Hoodline reported at the time.

Part of a Broader Summer Pattern

Tuesday's shooting adds to a string of gun violence that has hit Canarsie in recent weeks. On August 9, a 30-year-old man was fatally shot in the head and chest near Canarsie Pier off the Belt Parkway, a killing Hoodline noted was one of four recorded shootings in the neighborhood over a span of several weeks. On August 2, a 41-year-old man was shot in the leg outside a Canarsie event space along Avenue D, and the shooter fled the scene and remained at large. On July 18, a double shooting outside a deli at 9605 Glenwood Road left a man wounded in the back and a woman shot in the hand, with both victims transported to Brookdale Hospital.

Local law enforcement jurisdiction over Canarsie falls to the NYPD's 69th Precinct, headquartered at 9720 Foster Avenue and covering residential blocks and commercial strips along Rockaway Parkway, Avenue L, and Remsen Avenue, bounded by Linden Boulevard to the north and Jamaica Bay to the south, according to the NYPD. The precinct is the command now tasked with tracking down the men seen leaving the scene in the gray Toyota.

Community Outreach and Legal Stakes

The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office partners with the 67th Precinct Clergy Council, known locally as “The GodSquad,” to provide anti-violence street outreach, technical support, and youth intervention across eastern Brooklyn police commands, including the 69th Precinct in Canarsie, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office. The initiative is aimed at curbing gun crime through community engagement rather than enforcement alone.

If the men who fled the scene are eventually caught and found to have possessed a loaded firearm with intent to use it unlawfully, they could face Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree under New York Penal Law § 265.03. The Class C felony carries a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 3.5 years and a maximum of 15 years, reflecting the state's strict gun laws.

Investigators have not said whether the woman was an intended target or was caught in crossfire, and the motive behind the group of men fleeing the scene remains unknown. No arrests had been announced as of Tuesday night.
