Manhattan's Hudson River Park has become an unexpected viral destination, not for its scenery but for a bench dedicated to a tragic love story that has captured the hearts of millions online. Jack Ciapciak, a 32-year-old television writer, immortalized his love for late fiancé Jack Lorentzen with a dedication on a park bench, creating a spot that has now become a pilgrimage site for those touched by their story.
The love story, shared widely on social media platforms, began when Ciapciak proposed to Lorentzen with a bench plaque in the park on Sept. 29, 2022, ABC7NY reports. However, three months after the heartfelt proposal, Lorentzen passed away from an undiagnosed heart condition, transforming the bench into a symbol of lost love and enduring memories. The plaque, now bearing the quote "Find out who you are and try not to be afraid of it," has inspired countless visitors, and according to Ciapciak, "It's restored my faith in humanity and it's affirmed for me, that no one is alone."
The grieving fiancé turned to TikTok to express his emotions and avoid burdening his loved ones. His videos, documenting his daily visits to the bench and thoughts on grief, have since garnered over 30K followers and millions of views. "For the first time, I feel like I’m finding meaning in his death," Ciapciak told TODAY. Sharing his pain publicly has created a communal space for others grieving, something that Ciapciak says has brought him peace and gratitude, as reported by the NY Post.
Visitors find themselves drawn to this particular bench, often among the many dotting the West Side Highway's landscape. Tourist Stacie Winslow remarked to ABC7NY, "It was so funny to walk past all the other benches and yeah I know their names but I want Jack's bench." The site has fostered an environment where strangers not only learn about Jack Lorentzen's life but also share in the communal experience of loss.
The story has resonated so broadly that Ciapciak's followers have suggested he write a book about his experience.
