Westford is on the move with MassDOT kicking off the $15.6 million Boston Road Rehabilitation Project. The initiative is set to transform a 1.05-mile stretch between Main Street and the I-495 southbound off-ramp into a safer and more accessible route. MassDOT announced the launch, spotlighting the improved road layout that's making room for bike lanes and wider travel lanes.
"Today's groundbreaking reflects our commitment to creating safer, more accessible roadways," said Monica Tibbits-Nutt, MassDOT Secretary and CEO. The project, fueled by both federal and state funds, promises a new chapter in Westford's infrastructural narrative, according to a Congresswoman Lori Trahan, who "proud to have secured more than $12 million in federal funding" to streamline the town's roadway efficiency.
Enhancements aren't just about the asphalt. New sidewalks and updated signal systems are part of the mix, aimed at smoothing out traffic while giving pedestrians and cyclists a bigger piece of the road safety pie. The project serves up a substantial dose of ADA/AAB-compliant features, ensuring wheelchair ramps and other access points meet current standards.
Infrastructure upgrades are the heart of the project. "The rehabilitation of Boston Road makes Westford roads safer," Senator John J. Cronin explained. Beyond breaking up old pavement and laying down the new, the project throws a spotlight on water and stormwater system updates, demonstrating the scope goes well beyond a simple resurface job.
Described as a key investment for one of Westford's busiest corridors, the improvements point towards long-term growth for the community. With a timeline pointing to a summer 2027 completion, residents can look forward to a transformed travel experience that's been on the drawing board for quite a while. Strategic collaboration has been the cornerstone in moving this project from concept to construction, as Westford officials have worked in tandem with state and regional partners to set the stage for a smoother, more connected future.
