Over the past weekend, a significant drug bust occurred in the Baytown area, leading to the arrest of three individuals in connection with a large-scale cocaine trafficking operation. The U.S. Attorney's Office announced the seizure, in which law enforcement confiscated approximately 182 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value close to $2.3 million. The operation was said to be heading to the Houston area and onward to northern states.
The three men arrested have been identified as Pablo Luis Fuentes-Rivas, 40, of Baytown; Efren Pinales-Hernandez, 51, of Weslaco; and Daniel Teniente-Marfileno, 39, an undocumented resident of Houston. They were observed in the early hours last Saturday offloading narcotics from a semi-tractor trailer into a vehicle. Authorities managed to quickly apprehend the individuals, including Teniente-Marfileno, who had attempted to separately transport the cocaine bundles at the time of the interdiction. A statement obtained by the U.S. Attorney's Office describes the operation and the involvement of each suspect in detail.
All three men now face charges including possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and conspiracy to distribute. If convicted on these charges, they could each potentially receive a life sentence in prison and a $10 million fine. The arrests and charges come as part of a broader effort led by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF), which aims to disrupt and dismantle drug trafficking and other criminal networks that pose a threat to the United States.
The Drug Enforcement Administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement - Homeland Security Investigations led the investigation, with support from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Houston Police Department, Cameron County Sheriff’s Office, and Baytown Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Oscar Ponce is overseeing the prosecution of the case.
