Maui's scenic Puaʻa Kaʻa State Wayside will be getting a facelift starting next Monday, April 21. The popular rest stop along the Hāna Highway is set to be spruced up through May 12. Visitors are gonna have to briefly say aloha to this lush spot — it's closing for the duration. Tourists, if you’re plotting your picturesque drive to Hana, you'll need to temporarily scratch this wayside off your pit stop list.
According to the Department of Land and Natural Resources, the improvement project will include painting, and fixing up those restrooms that frankly could use a little love. Adjacent pavilions and railings are also to be improved. The DLNR is cautioning tour groups and locals alike to steer clear of the area to basically save themselves the headache of construction chaos and to keep traffic from becoming a snarl of epic proportions.
The attraction is known for its waterfalls and pools — a true testament to Maui’s natural beauty that draws folks all year round. But safety is key during such projects; the DLNR is asking people to give the construction zone a wide berth.
R&M Painting and Eco Blasting, LLC has snagged the job. A cool $60,800, which seems like chump change to ensure this little gem remains pristine and welcoming for visitors down the road. We're sure the result will be worth the brief pause these upgrades will force us to endure.
