For those looking to enjoy some springtime scenery at Park Road Park, take note that upgrades are on the horizon. Mecklenburg County has slated the start of dredging operations for the park's pond come April 16th, assuming the weather cooperates. The move comes as a measure to extract built-up sediment, various trash, and debris, all in the name of bolstering water quality and public safety. As reported by Mecklenburg County, the sediment plaguing the pond not only undermines its primary function but imposes risks on the aquatic ecosystem it hosts.

A 2022 study pointed fingers at concerning levels of nutrients as well as a significant amount of sediment. In response, the County is injecting funds into dredging at Park Road Park and neighboring Freedom Park, incorporated in the Fiscal Years 2024-2028 Capital Improvement Plan. Nick Walker, the park and recreation director for the county, told Mecklenburg County, "Park Road Park is one of our community’s most loved and used parks, and we are pleased to actively restore the pond’s health and functionality." Walker anticipates the local community will reap the benefits of this park upgrade.

With the dredging method chosen, there's no need to drain the pond completely — a hydraulic pump will manage the sediment removal, eventually transferring it to sizable bags positioned in the adjacent parking lot. There, the material awaits its drying and eventual removal from the site, explains Mecklenburg County. This parking lot, presently closed due to the construction of a new indoor pavilion, will remain so until the completion of both the pavilion and the pond's dredging.

For those planning to cast a line, it's worth noting fishing may see some limitations during the project's duration. Park visitors might be greeted by a mild odor issuing from the disturbed and drying sediment — an odor that, while momentarily disagreeable, is harmless and expected to quickly clear away post-dredging. Equipment will begin appearing on the site late March through early April, with the Park Road Park remaining accessible throughout the project. Yet, certain trails might sporadically close to facilitate the dredging and pavilion works, though no greenways will be shuttered in this endeavor.
