Residents in Mecklenburg County can anticipate some relief in the housing market as the county gears up to boost its affordable housing stock. In an ambitious move to address the housing crunch, Mecklenburg has been selected to join the second cohort of Counties for Housing Solutions (C4HS). This initiative, a collaboration between the National Association of Counties (NACo) and Smart Growth America, concentrates on escalating the supply of affordable homes.

Over a span of three months, the selected Mecklenburg County team is set to thoroughly work to detail a strategy for affordable housing development. Their marathon begins with identifying viable locations, planning for public dialogue, finding compatible developers, and then seeking out financial resources to make these proposed dwellings a reality. This intensive program will run through June, and Mecklenburg is one of just seven chosen members for this spring's squad.

According to Mecklenburg County news, the team roster includes professionals from the County Manager’s Office and Asset and Facility Management. County Commissioner George Dunlap, who also serves as NACo’s Second Vice President, will be part of this task force. Dunlap, vocal about the housing challenges facing the community, stated, “Finding and sustaining affordable housing is one of the most challenging issues in our community. I am confident our participation in this cohort will ultimately result in a much-needed, excellent and affordable housing project for Mecklenburg County.”

Dunlap’s confidence is set against the backdrop of a major urban issue: affordable housing, or the glaring lack thereof. As housing prices continue to push upward, this initiative stands as a beacon of hope for many who find themselves priced out of the market. The Mecklenburg County's team is now positioned to be able to strategically channel the mentorship and support offered by C4HS, aimed at concocting a tactical solution to a problem that has long left too many residents on the outside looking in.
