On the first Saturday of May, Mesa invites its residents to join in on a celebration of National Historic Preservation Month. The City of Mesa Historic Preservation Office is hosting a free event on May 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Post, located at 26 N. Macdonald. Visitors can look forward to engaging historic tours through downtown Mesa and the West 2nd Street historic district.
Students who participated in the City's Historic Essay and Visual Arts Contest will be recognized at an awards ceremony. The essay and visual arts contests were judged separately, with awards being given to the first, second, and third place winners in each category, as noted by Mesa Now. Not just the winners, but every contestant will walk away with a certificate of participation, celebrating their engagement with Mesa's history.
The get-together also promises to feed the minds and stomachs of those attending—there will be an availability of pizza and cupcakes for everyone present. This festivity serves as a single thread in the larger tapestry of events nationwide that aim to underscore the significance of protecting historic sites. According to the event details shared by Mesa Now, Mesa boasts eight local historic districts and more than a dozen landmarks that hold a spot on the Mesa Historic Property Register.
