The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has initiated a crackdown on 11 offshore gambling websites that were allegedly targeting Michigan residents with illegal gambling services. The MGCB has issued cease-and-desist letters to these websites, identified as Shazam Casino, Highway Casino, SlotsRoom, and others, demanding an immediate halt to their unlawfully provided services.
Under Michigan law, the platforms were reportedly operating without the appropriate state-issued licenses, contravening the Lawful Internet Gaming Act and other local regulations. In a statement by the State of Michigan, MGCB Executive Director Henry Williams emphasized the importance of safeguarding Michigan's gaming integrity, stating, "Our actions today underscore our unwavering dedication to holding illegal operators accountable."
The offshore websites are said to have employed various payment methods, including cryptocurrencies, to attract players. Reports from Michigan.gov indicate these sites were engaging in unethical practices such as withholding winnings and imposing unfair wagering requirements, which violate Michigan’s gambler protections.
MGCB's approach to this issue is not only about enforcing the law but also about protecting consumers. The board is committed to ensuring all operators adhere to state standards that cover responsible gaming, data security, and consumer protection. Failure to comply with the cease-and-desist order within 14 days may lead to the MGCB taking further legal actions in collaboration with the Michigan Attorney General’s Office.
