Minneapolis has just scored a reason to smile even brighter, landing a spot among the happiest cities across the globe. The city is reveling in being named one of the world's havens of bliss, according to the Institute for Quality of Life's recently published 2025 Happy City Index. Minneapolis finds itself in the elite gold category, rubbing shoulders with global titans of contentment, the city's official website reports.
"Of course Minneapolis is one of the happiest cities in the world—that’s no surprise to those of us who call it home," Mayor Jacob Frey conveyed, his city's vibrant mix of startup culture, recreational activities, and nightlife cited as key ingredients to the high rankings. The rigorous methodology of the Happy City Index meant that more than a hundred researchers examined the city across six rubrics, all roads leading to a cheerful population. Education & Innovation, notably, Minneapolis boasts a community with 25 percent holding master's degrees, and a 20 percent bilingual proficiency — signs of a "diverse and globally connected workforce," the city's announcement highlighted.
But it's not just brainpower that sets Minneapolis apart, governance & transparency also shine with mention of high voter turnout and streamlined digital services for residents. Under the gaze of the Index, what surfaced was also a portrait of health & well-being that includes vast mental health initiatives and commendable health coverage rates. Mobility & Transport received nods for a safe and reliable public transport system, one of the strands that weave together to form the city's fabric of joy.
Still, it's not just about getting from A to B, and feeling good — Minneapolis' happiness is rooted deeper, the environment & sustainability are also a cornerstone of the city's contentment, with commendable park spaces and aggressive environmental efforts. The local economy, too, was not left unpraised. The statistics are a testament, with 474 businesses per 1,000 residents and an admirable employment scene, according to official statements.
Global events, from AI debates to lingering pandemic effects, have not dampened the spirit of this thriving urban center. "Minneapolis is a thriving urban center. The economy…is robust and business friendly. Local governments have a direct and significant impact on people’s everyday lives and, consequently, their happiness," the Index notes, in findings echoed by the city's release. While Minneapolis ranks 30th in the gold tier, the world's happiest cities include Copenhagen, Zurich, and Singapore at the helm, promising pockets of happiness that span the globe.
