The Minnetonka Fire Department is reaching out to the community with a unique twist for their upcoming open house. Scheduled for Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., they're dialing down the sensory input to create an environment friendly to residents with sensory disorders. To be inclusive, there will be no blaring sirens or flashing lights at this event, making it more accessible for those who may feel overwhelmed by the usual fanfare associated with fire stations. Noted in a city event listing, the department invites everyone to Fire Station 1, located at 14550 Minnetonka Blvd.
The sensory friendly atmosphere is a considerate nod to individuals with autism and other sensory processing sensitivities. While the event will feature a range of public safety vehicles present for exploration, it's the absence of their typical uproar that speaks volumes about the department's commitment to inclusivity. Adding to the fun, a towering 15-foot inflatable slide will be among the attractions not making a sound.
Further sweetening the experience, attendees can enjoy cookies and the chance to meet local firefighters.
