Residents and commuters in the Kahului-Lahaina corridor should brace for possible delays as modular homes for wildfire survivors are set to be transported next Wednesday evening. According to the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT), trucks will begin moving the homes from a staging area in Kahului to the Ka Laʻi Ola housing site, offering much-needed relief to those still affected by the disaster. The official haul will begin at 9 p.m. on Wednesday as the large units make their way to their final destination in Lahaina.
For those planning their nighttime routes, be aware that the convoy will navigate several major thoroughfares, with the modular homes traveling along Kahului Beach Road (Route 3400), Kaʻahumanu Avenue (Route 32), and Hāna Highway (Route 36) before reaching their destination. Additionally, a preliminary haul of the homes from Kahului Harbor to the staging area near the Kahului small boat ramp is scheduled for both tomorrow and Wednesday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with trucks traveling along Kaʻahumanu Avenue and turning right onto Kahului Beach Road.
Traffic controllers and escort vehicles will be present, aiming to minimize disruption as the large units transit through the community. Still, drivers should expect slowdowns and possible stops, says HDOT, and they're urged to follow posted signs and instructions from traffic officials. Updates on the hauling schedule, in case of any changes, can be followed on HDOT's social media pages on Facebook and Twitter.
Owing to the size of the modular units, slowdowns and stops may be necessary along the route. "Motorists may encounter traffic slowdowns and stops in both directions along the route due to the size of the modular units," the HDOT conveyed through their announcement. Adding that, there will also be escorts during the transport, emphasizing the importance of adhering to instructions from traffic controllers.
This initiative represents a step toward restoring homes for those who have lost them due to the wildfire devastation, with the modular homes providing much-needed relief. The delivery of these homes is expected to temporarily affect traffic flow in Lahaina, but it is an essential part of the recovery process. As the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) manages the logistics, these homes will offer residents a chance to rebuild and move forward from the destruction.
