The hills and streets of Moorpark have turned into a solemn stage for human-wildlife conflict after a small dog was killed in a mountain lion attack last Friday. CBS News Los Angeles reported that residents in Moorpark are grappling with the shock following the deadly encounter between a local's pet and a mountain lion on a nearby trail. "I mean, here? An attack?" Linda Shair, a Moorpark resident, told CBS News Los Angeles in disbelief.
Despite warnings that mountain lions are most active from dusk until dawn, this daytime mauling has left the neighborhood on edge. The dog's owner fought back, hurling a rock at the attacker's head, causing it to release the pet. But the injuries sustained were too severe, and the family's four-legged member succumbed shortly after the attack. "We've lost a dog and it's really hard," Shair said in a statement given to CBS News Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, in a somewhat related vein, there has been increased mountain lion presence in the vicinity of Simi Valley. The Simi Valley Police Department issued a caution advising residents and visitors to maintain their vigilance, particularly around the 900 block of West Los Angeles Ave. near the Arroyo Simi Wash. “While mountain lions generally avoid humans, they can be unpredictable if startled or approached," the cautionary advice read, signaling the need for heightened alertness.
