The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) has officially garnered accreditation for both its law enforcement and corrections operations. As reported by MCSO, this dual accreditation represents a milestone that affirms the agency's dedication to the ideals of public safety, accountability, and professional excellence.
The process, initiated in the fall of 2023 for the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC) and a year later for the Inverness Jail (MCIJ), was designed to rigorously assess and ensure compliance with recognized best practices and legal benchmarks. MCSO emerged as one of the first agencies to successfully navigate and complete the Oregon State Sheriffs' Association's (OSSA) Jail Accreditation process, meeting 100% of statutory standards, at least 90% of Tier 1 standards, and no less than 80% of Tier 2 standards.
This accreditation exercise is expected to be undertaken every two years to not only maintain but to continuously elevate the standards of operation for county jails across Oregon. On the law enforcement front, MCSO has met the challenge set forth by Oregon House Bill 2162, which requires law enforcement agencies with a cadre of 100 or more sworn officers to obtain accreditation by July 1. Their preemptive achievement in September 2024 from the Northwest Accreditation Alliance showcases a commitment to meet stringent criteria demanding ongoing compliance and performance evaluations.
"Receiving accreditation is a testament to MCSO's dedication to professionalism, integrity, and service," Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O'Donnell stated, as per the MCSO's announcement. This accomplishment arises not only from the ability to pass standards but to the continuous striving to embody them in the service of the people of Multnomah County. Accreditation underscores not just a static point of achievement but represents a promise to improve continuously. It encapsulates a thorough evaluation of policy and procedure, an investment in training and professional development, a commitment to accountability and transparency, and a quest to streamline operational efficiency.
