Monica Green, a tax preparer from Needville, has been arrested on charges of assisting in filing fraudulent tax returns, according to U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei. Green is set to appear in court in Houston before U.S. Magistrate Judge Christina A. Bryan.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the federal grand jury returned the indictment on Wednesday last week, accusing Green of running a tax business from 2017 to 2021, where she allegedly inflated returns with false credits, deductions, and non-existent business losses to lower her clients' taxes. The scheme reportedly involved claims that sometimes exceeded tens of thousands of dollars.

Green allegedly charged clients hundreds of dollars for each falsified return, which included incorrect Schedule A deductions, fabricated Schedule C losses, and false education credits for colleges that clients never attended. These actions misrepresented financial standings and defrauded the government of revenue.

If convicted, Green faces a maximum of three years in prison for each of the six counts of aiding in the preparation and filing of false returns, along with potential fines up to $250,000. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Gray, with the IRS Criminal Investigation leading the investigation.
