In a report released by the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), a significant decrease in gun-related arrests and seizures has been noted for the year 2025 compared to the same period in the previous year. NOPD's statistics, detailed on their official news blog, show a 55% drop in the arrest numbers for illegal firearm possession, with 88 arrests made year to date, compared to 194 during the same timeframe in 2024. Further indicating a downward trend, gun seizures have fallen by 42%, from 685 seized firearms down to 398 by March 24, 2025.

Notwithstanding the overall crime rates, the NOPD and Alexandria Police Department conducted a joint operation leading to the arrest of one Trevor Delrie; this was for his alleged involvement in a homicide that occurred on March 27 in the 4200 block of Royal Street. The NOPD's preliminary report also reveals this singular yet concerning event despite the broader decline in gun-related infractions. Delrie, subsequently arrested last Friday in Alexandria, Louisiana, will be transported back to Orleans Parish to face a charge of second-degree murder.

The NOPD's brief doesn't fully explain the decrease, but the lower numbers may reflect changes in policing or community dynamics. Possible factors include law enforcement efforts, new laws, community programs, or broader social and political influences.
