The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has released its preliminary crime statistics from April 19-26, showing a mixed picture of the city's public safety landscape. According to the NOPD News, there have been a series of notable arrests, alongside a decrease in gun-related arrests and seizures compared to the previous year.
Transpiring last Wednesday, Jamal Washington was arrested in connection with two homicide incidents dated July 31. Found in the 8300 block of South I-10 Service Road and the 3700 block of Texas Drive, the incidents now have Washington facing second-degree murder charges. Following last Friday, NOPD apprehended Tremaine Sturgis for his alleged involvement in a murder that evening on the 4300 block of Saint Claude Avenue, which was promptly booked on one count of second-degree murder.
In a concerning turn for gun-related offenses, the NOPD has reported 109 arrests for illegal possession of a firearm year-to-date—a 51-percent decrease from the 223 arrests during the same period last year. This statistic stirs questions about enforcement and community safety, as reflected in the NOPD's data release.
Acknowledging the decrease in arrests, weapon confiscations by the NOPD paint a similar portrait. Having seized 578 firearms in criminal investigations by April 21; this is a significant 33-percent decrease compared to 867 such seizures made during the same period in 2024. The NOPD has not provided specifics on the factors leading to these declines, but it emphasizes a continuing commitment to address gun violence in the community.
