The Nevada Department of Transportation announced that additional lane shifts and traffic crossovers will begin on February 24 along Interstate 80 in Humboldt County. The changes are part of ongoing construction to add new truck lanes and parking facilities. Since August 2023, the area over Golconda Summit has had periodic lane reductions to one lane in each direction, affecting regular traffic patterns, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.
Construction is underway near the Golconda Summit to improve traffic flow with the addition of approximately three miles of truck climbing lanes in both directions. The Nevada Department of Transportation says the new lanes are intended to reduce delays caused by heavy trucks, which make up about 45% of traffic in the area. As part of the project, westbound traffic will temporarily shift to the eastbound side near Golconda exit 200. This change will help crews safely replace the second half of the interstate bridge.
Drivers on this freight route will face reduced speed limits, possibly down to 45 mph. Lane closures and traffic shifts will continue at all hours through summer 2025, and roadside truck parking areas will stay closed during construction. Restrictions for overdimensional vehicles remain in effect. Nevada Department of Transportation’s project includes new climbing lanes, 25 eastbound and 24 westbound truck parking stalls at the summit, bridge replacements, drainage improvements, lighting upgrades, vault toilets, and enclosed trash bins.
