As Newton County prepares to celebrate Older Americans Month, seniors are getting ready for the annual Chairman/Mayor's Walk on May 2. The event kicks off a month of activities that celebrate the energy and contributions of older community members.
The walk, which begins at the historic courthouse at 1124 Clark Street and ends a mile away at the Josephine B. Brown Senior Center, is more than just a physical activity; it's a symbolic stride toward changing the narrative around aging. Interim Chairman Linda Hays, along with Covington Mayor Fleeta Baggett, will set the pace for the event, which starts at 10 a.m., according to an official announcement on the Newton County website.
Following the walk, seniors can look forward to an array of festivities which include entertainment, games, lunch, and fellowship, all themed "Flip the Script on Aging," a nod to the changing discourse on what it means to grow older in today's society. The celebrations are set to cover the spectrum of senior engagement, celebrating their legacies and present-day activities.
Senior Services Director Freda Reed praised the seniors' contributions and encouraged the community to partake in the joyous occasion. "It is a blessing to see our seniors, who have achieved and accomplished so many things, remain active in our community," Reed said in a statement picked up by Newton County's official announcements, and the month's events will culminate in a concert at Turner Lake Park on May 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. offering a final hoorah in this month dedicated to transforming society’s perceptions on aging.
