Newton County’s District Attorney’s Office is expanding its support for victims and witnesses by adding a new victim/witness assistant. This decision was approved by the Board of Commissioners during the Tuesday Regular Meeting, and the position is ready to be filled immediately, as per the Newton County government website.
The addition comes in response to the growing demand for services. In the first three months of 2025 alone, the office reported approximately 8,000 contacts with victims. The DA's office has handled over 2,000 victim cases in 2024, and previously operated with only five victim advocates. The new position will help meet the required services outlined in the Georgia Constitution.
The funding for this position will come from the Local Victim Assistance Program, which is supported by 5 percent of fines and fees, ensuring that no additional burden will be placed on taxpayers. The Board of Commissioners’ approval emphasizes the importance of supporting victims and witnesses within the legal system.
