A vacant building in Las Cruces caught fire this past weekend, leaving residents concerned, though no injuries were reported. According to the City of Las Cruces, the Las Cruces Fire Department hurried to the scene on W. Hadley Avenue after receiving a call about the blaze shortly before 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The structure was significantly affected by the flames by the time firefighters arrived, with heavy fire visible from the edifice. Despite early reports from onlookers of a possible trespasser within the building, firefighters conducted a thorough search but, found no one trapped inside. It took them approximately 25 minutes to subdue the fire’s fury, stabilizing the situation with no casualties involved.
Investigators are presently examining the cause of the fire. As of the publication of this article, officials have not yet released an estimate of the damages by the inferno that engulfed the deserted building. The near-instant response of the Fire Department likely averted what could have been a more severe disaster, particularly if the fire had spread to inhabited buildings nearby.
Community members have expressed unease about the security and maintenance of vacant buildings, which present not only a fire hazard but also potential havens for illicit activities. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the management of derelict properties in growing urban areas. Further information will be relayed to the public as the investigation progresses, and Las Cruces officials are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to step forward.
