Residents of Norman looking to clear out their cupboards and drawers of unnecessary clutter should mark their calendars. In an effort to enhance community safety, the Norman Police Department (NPD) is gearing up to host a Community Safety Day. Scheduled for April 26 from 9 a.m. to noon, this event offers a rare chance for locals to securely get rid of unwanted items like outdated prescription drugs, sensitive documents, and even old ammunition, as mentioned in a recent announcement on the city's website.

Amid rising concerns over identity theft, NPD has partnered with Absolute Data Shredding to provide a document shredding service. During the event, residents can bring up to five boxes of documents containing sensitive information to be shredded free of charge. Looking to protect personal information from getting into the hands of criminals, the Norman community residents can take the opportunity to declutter and protect themselves from identity theft simultaneously.

Moreover, as part of the continuing efforts to combat the opioid crisis and minimize environmental hazards, the Pharmaceutical Take-Back Program offers a pill disposal service. The program, which prohibits syringes, liquid medications, epipens, or inhalers, is held in partnership with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics.

Concerning ammunition, NPD will accept old and unwanted ammunition to be safely destroyed. Strictly no explosives will be allowed. Residents clearing out their homes of any bullets or ammunition that was once needed has a secure way to ensure they are properly and safely dealt off. The NPD Community Safety Day aims to provide the Norman public with peace of mind and a cleaner, safer environment for all.

With all services being provided free of charge, the NPD encourages Norman citizens to take part in the Community Safety Day. It reflects an ongoing commitment to public safety and responsible disposal of potentially dangerous items. The department is hosting the event in the parking lot on the southeast corner of Andrews Park, near Daws Street and James Garner Avenue. For those interested in learning more about the event, additional details can be found on the City of Norman's official website.
