North Carolinians are being called to arms, not in the service of combat, but in a battle against roadside debris as the N.C. Department of Transportation kicks off its Spring Litter Sweep this weekend. Volunteers across the state are welcome, and those interested can reach out to their local litter program coordinator through the NCDOT website.
Once the sleeves are rolled up and the spirits high, participants will have a bevy of cleanup supplies at their disposal, with local NCDOT County Maintenance Yard Offices providing orange safety vests, gloves, and trash bags. This initiative, extending from today through April 26, is more than a civic service—it's a communal rallying cry for a cleaner state.
A simultaneous act of remembrance is imbued in the landscape of North Carolina, as the bridge on N.C. 125 over Interstate 95 in Roanoke Rapids was recently dedicated to Patrolman Ralph W. Arnold. According to the N.C. Department of Transportation's announcement, "Over the past year, the Board of Transportation and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol have been dedicating bridges to fallen patrol members who haven't already been honored."
The Spring Litter Sweep and bridge dedication aside, April marks National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a reminder met with sobering statistics from the NCDOT. Nearly 16,000 people were killed and around 1.8 million were injured in distraction-affected crashes between 2018 – 2022 in the U.S. In North Carolina alone, "there was a total of 261 fatalities in distraction related crashes" in 2023 and 2024, as per NCDOT's records. Drivers are urged to shelve the distractions and keep their attention on the road.
