In a bid to make the roads safer for both workers and drivers, Gov. Josh Stein of North Carolina has declared April as Work Zone Awareness Month, as highlighted in an announcement on the NCDOT's website. This safety campaign stretches out to include a Work Zone Awareness Week from April 21-25, all part of an effort to reduce the alarming number of accidents within these zones.

North Carolina has seen more than 217 fatalities in work zones from 2019 to 2024, with 47 lives lost just last year, transportation secretary Joey Hopkins shared the grave statistics and added on NCDOT, "Far too many people are killed or seriously injured in work zones;” these deaths and injuries are, he asserted, preventable by taking simple measures such as slowing down, exercising caution, and giving the road the attention it demands when inside a work zone. Speeding and distractions at the wheel are the heavyweights among reasons for more than half the crashes, and this is when all that complexity of fragile human life gets distilled down to the drivers' choices, how they handle that wheel and the seconds they spare to look around.

There's no escaping the shared responsibility for safety as Mark Ezzell, director of the N.C. Governor's Highway Safety Program, emphasizes, "Everyone plays a role in work zone safety." In a statement obtained from the NCDOT press release, Ezzell pointed out the inherent dangers with people working mere feet from moving traffic, highlighting the critical need for heightened alertness since reaction times are slim and the margin for error is next to none. In addition to his appeal for attentiveness, Ezzell also pushed for seatbelt usage and sober driving as pillars for road safety.

Amplifying its stance on work zone safety, the N.C. Department of Transportation is set to host this year's National Work Zone Awareness Week, with grand plans on the horizon for a news conference at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds on April 22, Ezzell shared plans including the distribution of videos, social media messages, and news releases aimed at promoting the importance of work zone safety during the week-long event, they're really working to drive the point home. The NCDOT crafted a national poster featuring the slogan "Respect the Zone So We All Get Home," which is being utilized by transportation agencies all over the country as they rally behind NCDOT's safety promotion efforts.
