The National Weather Service in Tampa has issued a high rip current risk alert effective today. This warning spans across Pinellas, Coastal Hillsborough, Coastal Manatee, Coastal Sarasota, Coastal Charlotte, and Coastal Lee Counties. Beachgoers are advised to exercise caution as "dangerous rip currents" are expected to present a significant risk.

For those planning to dip into the sea, the NWS advises swimming near a lifeguard and suggests that if one is caught in a rip current, to remain calm and float. Rather than swimming against the current, it's recommended to swim parallel to shoreline if possible. Anyone unable to escape should signal to shore for assistance. This information was part of the coastal hazard message made public by the NWS.

Meanwhile, the weather forecast for the Tampa area promises sunny skies with temperatures climbing. The daytime high is expected to reach near 84 degrees today with a north wind at a mild 5 to 7 mph. These pleasant conditions will carry on into the night, where temperatures are slated to drop to around 64. Looking ahead, the weekend is anticipated to stay sunny with daytime highs ranging from the mid-70s to low 80s, and night time lows in the 50s, as reported by the NWS.

The clear skies and warm sun however, do come with their own advisories beyond the coast. The NWS highlights that while the conditions seem perfect for a day at the beach, the rip current risk should not be underestimated. "Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water," the warning states, emphasizing the power of these natural phenomena.
