Mayor Eric Adams is set to extend the city's empathy and support to the Dominican Republic, following the tragic roof collapse at Santo Domingo's Jet Set nightclub. This catastrophe claimed the lives of more than 200 individuals, including famed merengue singer Rubby Pérez and several prominent figures who had connections to New York City. According to a press release obtained by The New York Post, Adams' presence underscores the deep ties between New York and the Dominican community, with Adams expressing his, and the city's, deepest condolences to the bereaved families.
The delegation, as reported by CBS News, includes NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodríguez, who, being a native of the Dominican Republic, noted the significance of the visit during a time of collective mourning. However, details surrounding the disaster's cause and the building's last inspection remain unclear, prompting widespread concern and speculation. The catastrophe saw not only local victims but also the loss of former MLB players Octavio Dotel and Tony Blanco, as well as NYC art dealer Elivira Malkic and her husband Kahim Boubazine.
Back home, a show of support was visible through lowered flags at City Hall and a vigil hosted at Inwood's 809 Restaurant, where the local Dominican community gathered in a somber reflection of loss and solidarity. "This happened in the Dominican Republic, but we are here in the Dominican community showing love for our people, letting them know that they're not alone," Shery Olivo told CBS News at the vigil.
Mayor Adams' impending visit — scheduled between today and on Tuesday — places First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro at the helm of the city during his absence. The somber nature of this international gesture is further compounded by Rodriguez's comments on the profound personal impact of the tragedy as "a moment of solidarity and personal faith," a sentiment he shared with CBS News. Meanwhile, Antonio Espaillat, the owner of Jet Set Club, declared his cooperation with local authorities amid the ongoing investigation, a detail reported by The New York Post.
