O'ahu's motorists, brace yourselves for some inconveniences as the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation kicks off two weeks of nightly closures for Hālawa and the H-3 Freeway off-ramps from the westbound Moanalua Freeway. These closures are set to pave the way for various enhancements, including asphalt repaving, striping, and the installation of in-pavement loop detectors designed to monitor traffic flow.
Starting Sunday evening, and repeating on Monday through Friday evenings, the transportation disruptions are scheduled from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. the following day, and from 9 p.m. through 5:30 a.m., respectively. While this may add a twist to the night-time commute, the detour routes will redirect traffic via the H-99 Stadium/ʻAiea Exit for H-3 freeway access during the ramp closure, according to a statement obtained by HDOT.
The work schedule, which begins the week of April 27, anticipates completion by Friday, May 9, and is, of course, dependent on the whims of the weather. Special duty police officers will also grace the scene, assisting with traffic control and ensuring that safety remains a priority during these night-time operations.
For travelers already dreading the added time to their journeys, HDOT has offered a digital olive branch in the form of electronic message boards set to inform motorists of the upcoming closures. Those seeking a broader picture of state roadway interruptions may find solace – and perhaps a better route – on HDOT's website which lists full lane closure details. HDOT extends its gratitude to the public for their cooperation, during these essential maintenance efforts which aim to "maintain safe facilities"
