An Oakdale man has been found guilty of arson by a Stanislaus County jury, according to the Stanislaus County District Attorney's office. Julio Garibay, Jr., 31, was convicted of deliberately setting fire to a Modesto strip mall, with an additional finding that he had a prior serious felony conviction. This arson attack, which occurred last year on November 19, left the mall on 15th street with extensive damage, illustrated by photos shared by the authorities. Garibay now faces a 12-year sentence for his actions.
Details from the investigation reveal that surveillance footage played a crucial role in Garibay's conviction. The District Attorney's announcement stated that the video showed Garibay pouring a flammable liquid onto an electrical panel at the mall and breaking into a vacant suite. Minutes after his departure, the structure was engulfed in flames.
The Stanislaus Regional Fire Investigation Unit, alongside the Modesto Police Department, spearheaded the investigation resulting in Garibay's conviction. Deputy District Attorneys Harshan Samra and James Langston prosecuted on behalf of The People. The Stanislaus County District Attorney, Jeff Laugero, reported Garibay's conviction and upcoming sentencing on May 28, as his office seeks to close a case that has no doubt affected local businesses and the surrounding community.
Media representatives seeking further details on the case have been directed to reach out to the District Attorney's office via email. Inquiries can be sent to [email protected], ensuring the public and press stay informed on the proceedings leading up to and including the sentencing later in May.
