Florida's medical community is facing a serious ethical issue as Dr. Jose Jacob, a 65-year-old cardiologist at the Cardiovascular Institute of Central Florida, was arrested on charges of battery and accused of inappropriate behavior during patient visits. According to FOX 35 Orlando, Jacob allegedly hugged and kissed a female patient without her consent and asked her inappropriate personal questions. The victim, a woman in her 50s, reported feeling scared and unable to drive after her appointment last Monday, leading her to call her daughter from the clinic's parking lot, who advised her to contact the police.
The Ocala Police Department has been investigating this case since the victim's report and has found that it is not an isolated incident. Prior complaints, including a settled civil case from 2017 in North Carolina and one handled internally at the Ocala practice, suggest a pattern of misconduct. Dr. Jacob's version of events has varied. He initially denied the allegations, later providing conflicting statements, as detailed in an article by WFTV. With evidence from various sources conflicting, the police have informed the public through a news release.
As investigators dove into Jacob’s past, they discovered the 2017 incident in North Carolina, where a patient stated Jacob made inappropriate comments and physical advances. Despite the gravity of the accusations, with the patient reporting nightmares after the incident, it was concluded as a civil matter. The Miami Herald notes that Jacob's medical license records in Florida and North Carolina showed no formal disciplinary complaints before these events. In response to these recent developments, the Ocala Police Department urges anyone with similar experiences or knowledge of misconduct involving Dr. Jacob to come forward and contact law enforcement.
