An off-duty police officer's quick action helped to thwart an attempted armed robbery in Dorchester yesterday morning, with officers later arresting a 36-year-old local man. According to a Boston Police Department report, Ricardo Montero was apprehended after allegedly trying to steal goods valued at around $553 from a store at 451 Washington Street.

The incident unfolded around 11:35 AM when the off-duty officer, who happened to be inside the business at the time, noticed Montero attempting to quickly remove items. The officer self-identified and ordered Montero to stop and discard the merchandise. Unfazed, the perpetrator instead pulled out a hammer but was swiftly disarmed by the officer. Montero then fled on foot, triggering a response from District C-11 officers.

In the moments that followed, additional police units scoured the area and spotted Montero briskly walking down Washington Street and then turning onto Algonquin Street. When officers intercepted and instructed him to halt, Montero tensed up and resisted being handcuffed. Nevertheless, the police were able to subdue him without further incident and recover the stolen items.

Following the altercation, Montero was arrested and is slated to face charges of Armed Robbery and Resisting Arrest. There were no reported injuries during the confrontation, and Montero is anticipated to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court. The Boston Police Department’s statement detailed that all the items stolen by Montero were successfully returned to the store after his detention.
