Yesterday, the Oklahoma Legislature held a joint session commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, a poignant occasion that drew state lawmakers to honor the memory of the 168 lives lost in the 1995 tragedy. In the company of survivors, family members, first responders, and dignitaries, the lawmakers took a moment to reflect on the impact of the fateful day and its aftermath on the community and the entire state.
The session featured contributions from former Governor Frank Keating, who helmed the state's executive office during the time of the bombing; his insights provided a sober backdrop to the proceedings, as the lawmakers listened attentively and paid their respects to the victims. "Thirty years ago, our state endured unimaginable heartbreak," House Speaker Kyle Hilbert, R-Bristow, expressed during the session, according to the Oklahoma State Senate.
Senate President Pro Tem Lonnie Paxton, R-Tuttle, reinforced this narrative reminding those present that while the bombing irrevocably altered the state, the reaction defined by tenacity and unity showcased the resolve of Oklahomans, "The bombing changed us forever, but it did not defeat us," said Paxton, "What emerged from the rubble was not only grief, but an extraordinary sense of resolve and determination that captured the hearts of people across the nation" furthering the sentiment of remembrance and unity in the face of such an atrocity, as reported by the Oklahoma State Senate. Each of the victims was duly remembered with their names displayed during the ceremony which also featured a Journey of Hope video.
The Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum was recognized for its work in preserving the memory of the tragedy. Lawmakers encouraged Oklahomans to take part in remembrance events throughout the week, focusing on the importance of coming together to honor the victims, survivors, and everyday heroes. This reflects the strength and resilience known as the Oklahoma spirit.
