Oklahoma State Sen. Nikki Nice's bill to change zoning regulations in the Capitol-Medical Center Improvement and Zoning District has passed the Senate and is now in the House. According to the Oklahoma Senate, Senate Bill 717 would shift control of code enforcement and neighborhood issues from a state-appointed entity to local governments. These matters have been managed at the state level since the late 1970s.
The Oklahoma Senate unanimously approved SB 717, a bill focused on local governance. Sen. Nikki Nice, D-Oklahoma City, stated, "I wanted to make sure they could work through their municipal government and their council representative to help them address local issues." This marks Nice's first Senate-approved bill. The legislation now moves to the House, where Rep. Jason Lowe, D-Oklahoma City, serves as the principal author, as reported by the Oklahoma Senate.
A proposal from Sen. Nice, based on her time on the Oklahoma City Council, seeks to change how code enforcement and other neighborhood issues are handled in the Capitol-Medical Center Improvement and Zoning District. "What I found as a council member is that our communities within this district, which was formed in the late 1970s, have to use a state-appointed body in order for them to have code enforcement and address other issues in their neighborhoods," she said. The bill passed unanimously in the Senate and now moves to the House, where Rep. Jason Lowe will oversee its progress, as stated by the Oklahoma Senate.
