Breaking into a new era of sports spectacle, One Knox SC has set the bar high, not just with the first soccer match at Covenant Health Park but also boasting a league attendance record. The fresh downtown stadium, which adeptly transitioned from baseball to soccer, saw a home crowd that elevated the game experience to unparalleled heights, as per WVLT. Drew McKenna, managing partner of One Knox SC, conveyed pride in the stadium's successful dual-sport conversion and maintained that "the best thing for the players isn't the turf; it's the fans."
However, the path to this multipurpose dream wasn't devoid of hiccups; after seeing the soccer pitch revert to its baseball origins, challenges emerged, particularly in the arena of logistics, with a transition process which took 17.5 hours to complete the initial baseball to soccer conversion and 10.5 hours for the return, according to a Knox News article. Still, the stadium's adaptability was not significantly impaired, and subsequent transformations are expected to be more efficient as the crew refines their tempo.
Among the stadiums' key design features is a retractable pitcher's mound, a rarity that demonstrates Covenant Health Park's commitment to seamless transitions between sports. Even with this innovation, the field crew acknowledges the necessity of optimizing the changeover period, with Steve Polte, Earthadelic owner, expressing "extremely confident" optimism for future improvements, as noted by Knox News. This expectation is a nod to the learning curve facing staff as they worked tirelessly through the adverse weather, which marked the inception of the stadium's operation.
Adding to the stadium's narrative is the introduction of One Knox SC's women’s team, which hosts its first women's match, a testament to its inclusive and multifaceted functionality. Ground crews have showed resilience in their adaptation to the convertible field's demands, pulling double duty to ensure both baseball and soccer find a home on this chameleonic turf, McKenna commended their efforts in an interview with WBIR, where he remarked on the unparalleled fan experience resulting from the stadium's flexibility and professional ambiance, "The crowd there was so fun for them. Seeing them celebrate with the crowd… was so unique."
