Governor Tina Kotek took a strong stand against the Trump Administration today, refusing to end Oregon’s support for diversity, equity, and inclusion in student programs. Her response comes after the administration threatened to cut federal funding, which could seriously impact education in the state, as reported by the Oregon Governor's Office.
This financial tug-of-war began when the federal government issued an ultimatum to the Oregon Department of Education, insisting on a revocation of the state's inclusive educational efforts, certified by their adherence to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. According to an official statement obtained by the Oregon Governor's Office, the Governor is drawing a line in the sand. "The Trump Administration’s threat to shortchange Oregon students hurts children and families, and undermines the dedication and work of our educators," Kotek said.
Kotek has been vocal about her priorities, with education at the forefront, "Making sure every child has the opportunity to meet their future promise with a strong public education is one of the most fundamental responsibilities of government and one of my top priorities as Governor," she stated in the Oregon Governor's Office release. Under her direction, the Oregon Department of Education is pushing back by verifying their programs are in compliance with civil rights laws, which appear to legally safeguard the funding in question.
The Governor's response highlights a tension between state and federal visions for education, and raises questions about the autonomy of state policies versus federal funding control. In her statement, the Governor solidified her stance: "We will not tolerate this unwarranted and unlawful attempt to take away resources promised to Oregon students and paid for by the tax dollars, we send to the federal government." With this declaration, Kotek seems ready to go toe-to-toe with the Trump Administration, defending what she views as the "Oregon values" at stake in this educational battle, as per the Oregon Governor's Office.
