This morning in downtown Orlando, a confrontation ended in the shooting death of a man by police officers. As reported by ClickOrlando, the incident, which unfolded around 1:30 a.m. outside the Thrive Cocktail Lounge & Eatery, began with a fight that caught the attention of the Orlando Police Department's Crime Center detectives who were monitoring the area and saw the man's gun drop from his pants, which he then recovered and fired a shot into the air.
Responding officers repeatedly directed the man to discard his weapon, but he allegedly ignored their commands—the department stated officers shot at the man after he failed to comply. Subsequently, he was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released, but Orlando police Chief Eric Smith mentioned he was in his 30s. This story comes in addition to details from WESH that confirm the officers involved were unharmed. They will be on administrative leave per protocol.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, with no further information readily available. Body camera footage from the officers is expected to play a key role in piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
