The Summerlin Avenue Improvement Project in Orlando is set to enter a critical new phase, with significant updates to its road infrastructure poised to impact traffic. According to WFTV, this phase will commence on April 28, resulting in the westbound lanes of South Street being reduced to a single lane of traffic stretch from South Mills Avenue up to the point where the road re-expands to its usual three lanes west of the intersection with Summerlin Avenue.
This lane closure is expected to last around five months, prompting drivers to seek alternate routes to avoid delays. WESH also notes that the Summerlin Avenue and South Street intersection will be fully closed to accommodate the construction. Commuters are advised to prepare for traffic pattern changes and plan extra travel time provisions.
The city is collaborating closely with the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) on this extensive project, which aims to thoroughly upgrade the infrastructure for drinking water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater systems. As reported by Bungalower, this project is a multi-year endeavor with a completion date of the summer of 2028.
Alongside these adjustments, the project plans to enhance pedestrian safety and update the streetscape significantly. While most of the work is scheduled from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., WFTV reported some night and weekend work may also need to occur. The intersection of Robinson Street and Summerlin Avenue, currently undergoing construction, is due to reopen on April 18, slightly easing some traffic concerns in the area.
