An Ormond Beach man, identified as Trevin D. Smith, 32, was arrested following a rapid investigation into a 35-year-old woman's suspected fentanyl overdose, Volusia County authorities reported. The arrest occurred less than eight hours after the woman's death on Wednesday morning. According to FOX 35 Orlando, messages on the victim's phone suggested that Smith had recently sold her fentanyl and was willing to sell more.
Volusia Sheriff’s Office Overdose Task Force detectives, posing as the deceased victim, were able to set up a meeting with Smith at a local 7-Eleven in Ormond Beach. Pursued by the deputies, Smith fled on foot but was eventually detained after a brief chase that ended at a nearby gas station. During his attempted escape, detectives reported that Smith threw away a cellphone and a small bag containing fentanyl, which were both later recovered, as per details provided in a WFTV report.
Smith now faces several allegations, including sale and delivery of fentanyl, resisting arrest without violence, and using a two-way communication device to commit a felony. Further complicating his charges was the presence of his toddler, who was found unrestrained and without a child safety seat in the back seat of his vehicle during the arrest. This led to an additional charge of child neglect, as reported by CBS12. Smith is currently being held without bond as the investigation into the overdose death carries on.
The victim, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, succumbed to what appears to be a fentanyl overdose. Her connection with Smith came to light upon officials locating incriminating exchanges between the two on her mobile device.
