In a move to progressively enhance digital equity, Philadelphia's Office of Innovation and Technology has rolled out the Philly Free Wi-Fi Dashboard, an initiative to accurately track and report on the city's free Wi-Fi access points. This new tool is paired with the Philly Free Wi-Fi Finder, aimed at helping residents locate over 180 free Wi-Fi spots throughout the city, including libraries, recreation centers, and parks. The dashboard is a result of the Verizon iNET Renewal Agreement and is designed to serve industry professionals, policymakers, and community organizations with real-time data.
The latest enhancements to Philadelphia's connectivity scene are to gradually make available 1 Gigabit of fiber and public Wi-Fi at numerous city-owned locations over the coming years. According to the City of Philadelphia, the newly launched Philly Free Wi-Fi Dashboard functions as a transparency tool, offering live updates on this digital upgrade. Providing varying data metrics, including high-speed Internet and computer programs availability, the dashboard is a rich resource for shaping the digital landscape. Key stakeholders will have the insights to better serve residents and push digital equity programs forward.
The dashboard is not just numbers and statuses; it includes interactive features that allow users to search for services by location, view status updates for the Verizon iNET project, and layer various metrics such as income, internet subscription rates, and device ownership. The real-time data visualization aids in pinpointing areas that are in need of enhanced connectivity and supports localized, data-driven decision making for closing digital divides.
A practical approach to using the dashboard includes searching for a site by name or address, triggering a popup with detailed data upon selecting a particular site, and applying key layering metrics to understand the demographics of the area. Professionals can also filter by services like free Wi-Fi and computer facilities. Helpful graphs and census data, including broadband coverage maps, aid in identifying where the service gaps are and how to strategically close them. The dashboard is also built to accommodate performance metrics evaluation for a holistic understanding of the city's digital accessibility efforts.
