Philadelphia's Playstreets program, a staple of summer youth outreach for over six decades, is making its annual return this June. Offering a fusion of nourishment and play, the initiative serves up free meals and a safe playing haven for children up to 18 years of age. According to an announcement by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, the program is active city-wide from June 16 to August 22 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Playstreets requires community support to thrive, particularly in the role of Playstreets supervisors. As the city calls for volunteers, it's clear that the backbone of Playstreets is the residents who keep the streets clear of traffic and the program running smoothly. To be a playstreet, a block must adhere to a set of criteria, such as a majority resident agreement and an absence of proximate playgrounds.
