The Pittsburgh Pirates have launched a program offering fans who purchased "Bucco Bricks" back in 1999 a complimentary replica of their engraved bricks. This move comes as a gesture to make amends after the original bricks were removed during renovations at PNC Park. In a release documented by Audacy, Pirates President Travis Williams stated, "We are, and have always been, absolutely committed to ensuring these special messages and tributes live on permanently at PNC Park."
As reported by CBS News Pittsburgh, outrage among fans brewed after the bricks, purchased as part of a stadium opening initiative, were spotted at a recycling facility. One fan, upon discovering that a brick bearing his daughter's name had been discarded, expressed disbelief at the lack of respect shown. Brian Carothers, another aggrieved brick owner, offered to purchase the bricks to restore them to their rightful owners, saying, "These are just people who want to get in touch with the memories they have about baseball."
Pirates' owner Bob Nutting personally addressed Carothers' concerns through an email, acknowledging the situation and apologizing for the bricks being "carelessly tossed aside" which was reported by CBS News Pittsburgh. Nutting expressed support for Carothers' initiative if it were viable. Additionally, Williams's statement, "I know how meaningful the messages and tributes are. We respect that. We appreciate that," further bespeaks the organization's commitment to preserving fans' memories.
In his letter to fans, which was shared with TribLive, Williams apologized, stating, "There are no excuses. I am sorry." He detailed the issues leading to the removal of the bricks, highlighting safety hazards due to an uneven walking surface. Though the team's current record stands at six wins and 12 losses, Williams hopes that through this act of reparation.
To claim a replica, original brick donors are directed to complete a form on the Pirates' website.
