The Plymouth Fire Department is opening its doors to aspiring heroes with its "heroes wanted" campaign, offering part-time and on-call firefighting positions to people from all walks of life. No previous experience is required, as the department will provide all necessary training and education to those selected. "Becoming a firefighter may sound daunting, but people are often surprised to find that it isn’t. We teach you everything you need to know," Assistant Fire Chief Steve Baker said, as reported by PlymouthMN.gov.
These positions are designed specifically to be flexible, catering to both full-time workers and parents with children, ensuring that a wide range of community members can contribute and serve. To kickstart the recruitment process, the Fire Department is hosting meetings on June 5 and June 12 at Plymouth Fire Station 2. Assistant Fire Chief Baker advises interested folks to attend, stating, “Our team will be there to answer your questions, show you around the fire station and give you a glimpse into what being a part-time/on-call firefighter is all about.” Details on these events were made available through the same announcement.
In terms of benefits, this job goes beyond responding to 911 calls for fires, emergency medical services, and vehicle crashes. Plymouth firefighters are equipped with critical thinking skills transferrable to many areas of life, forge new friendships, and earn an hourly wage for all on-duty activities, inclusive of training. A pension plan further sweetens the deal, with partial vesting after five years and complete vesting at ten. The fire department operates out of two modern fire stations and offers the ability to defer wages up to 100% into either a Roth IRA or a Traditional 457 retirement plan. To qualify for the role, applicants must meet certain criteria, including being over 18 years old, having at least a high school diploma or equivalent, living within eight minutes of a fire station, and holding a valid Minnesota driver's license.
Residents interested in learning more about becoming a Plymouth firefighter or looking to apply can do so from Monday, April 28, through Sunday, June 29. The official Plymouth Fire Department website provides comprehensive information on the positions and the application process. Questions can be directed to the firefighter recruitment line, or emails can be sent to [email protected], as detailed in the same announcement.
